Activity at the landfill site in Markham Vale, Chesterfield, was split into three areas:

  • Leachate reception area
  • Permanent capping
  • Cell 4a, 4b, and asbestos cell extension.

Works included:

  • Constructing a fully contained concrete leachate reception area, including a completely automated leachate extraction system
  • Permanent capping activity that featured 21,000m2 of fully welded LLDPE and protector geotextiles and two layers of restoration soils
  • Removing 108,000m3 of soil
  • Installation of a ground water extraction system with 700m fully welded HDPE pipework into chamber and pumping system
  • Installation of 35,000m3 of engineered barrier and 35,000m2 of fully welded HDPE and protector geotextile
  • Installation of full leachate extraction system featuring bespoke chambers with 800m of HDPE pipework and filter geotextile
  • Installation of internal haul road and turnaround pad
  • Geophysical detection on all cells

Construction of waste recycling facility and hard standing area on a former landfill site. The site’s original ground make-up comprised of approx 5m of household waste, covered with a thin layer of capping.

Works involved:

  • Groundworks – 105 pre-cast driven piles installed up to depth of 12m, R.C. pile caps  c/w holding down bolts, constructed on the piles in preparation for the steel frame building
  • Ground bearing slab – (50m x 40m) – 200mm thick with 2 layers of A393 mesh and C60 concrete – a dry shake mix finish was applied for an abrasion resistance finish.
  • Construction of 11m high cladded steel framed building (50m x 40m) with seven 6m high roller shutter doors
  • Construction of 2500m2 of external hard standing – 200mm thick PAV2 concrete slab with single layer of A252 steel mesh
  • Drainage – 550L/m of 300mm twin wall underground drainage laid for the surface water to     then flow through a 14000 litre interceptor and into an attenuation lagoon. From here the water runs through a penstock valve and hydro brake, finally into a soakaway. A rainwater harvesting tank was installed to recycle rainwater from the WTS roof
  • Reinforced concrete push walls – 110L/m, 350mm thick, cast in-situ, 4.0m high
  • Office and welfare facilities (80m2) – constructed and installed
  • Retaining wall – 50L/m, 400mm thick cast in-situ 1-4m high retaining wall, adjacent to existing access road
  • Weighbridges – installation of 2 pit weighbridges

Construction of material recycling facility for the treatment of non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste. Developed on the client’s existing landfill and composting site, the MRF has the capacity to process 100,000 tonnes of waste per year.

Bulk earthworks phase:

  • Bulk excavation – 105,000m3 excavated and brought up to design level with 120,000m3 of engineered clay, compacted in layers and mechanically stabilised with granular layer.

Civils and structural works:

  • Construction of 70m x 65m steel framed building
  • Construction of 7000m2 of external hardstanding – 200mm thick PAV2 concrete slab
  • Drainage – 550L/m of 300mm twinwall underground drainage laid
  • Drainage channel – 180m of cast insitu with 1:300 fall
  • Ground bearing slab – (65m x 70m) – 200mm thick constructed on top of 48 concrete pad foundations
  • Concrete push walls – 270L/m, 350mm thick, cast in-situ, varying from 3.2m to 5m in height.
  • Internal concrete pit (200m2) – 2.8m deep, constructed to accommodate a waste conveyor belt, tying in with ground bearing slab at top of pit walls
  • Office and welfare facilities (195m2) – constructed and installed

Construction of building to house mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant at Wrexham Recycling Park. The plant extracts recyclable material from domestic refuse and transforms the residue into fuel for multifuel power generation facilities.

The works consisted of:

  • Brown field site – full remediation works undertaken, including removal of asbestos, prior to commencement of civils works.
  • Construction of steel framed building 140m x 67m to house the machinery – 7000m3 of structural concrete placed.
  • Construction of 5 concrete drying tunnels (8m x 5.5m x 32m long)
  • Stats diversion
  • Drainage 940m (MDPE/twinwall) 620m foul drainage – incorporating process drainage.
  • Value engineering within the design from Stats diversions to contaminated waste dealt with on site.

The project was primarily to enable existing gas wells to continue extracting gas, whilst having the ability to incorporate pneumatic pumps to assist with leachate control.

Works included:

  • Installation of a temporary manifold, surface laid 90mm lateral gas connections and associated connections to four recently drilled gas wells in the current live tipping area of the landfill
  • Installation of 125mm gas extraction main with associated control valves and chambers
  • Supply and installation of pumped well heads to five wells in the restored area of the landfill, with associated buried air and condensate connections
  • Supply and installation of pumped well heads to two existing small diameter wells within the restored area, with associated buried air and condensate connections
  • Installation of air and condensate discharge lines to facilitate the future fitting of pneumatic pumps in the small diameter wells

Work was completed in July 2011, on schedule.

  • 300m fully welded HDPE leachate pipework
  • 17,500m2 of baled tyres placed to form the leachate drainage blanket
  • Upper sidewall extension to cell

The cell was completed three weeks ahead of programme.
