Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is reaffirming its commitment to a net zero world by sponsoring sustainable livestock farming conference Da Byw 2024.

The Ruthin-headquartered firm is supporting the agricultural event that has a three-pronged mantra of people, planet, profit.

Those three Ps form the central discussions at Da Byw, which runs between 14-15 June at Coed Coch, Dolwen, Conwy, as a spotlight is shone on farming and how it can be part of the solution to many of the current environmental challenges.

The aims are to:

  • Help Welsh livestock farmers move towards sustainable, low input farming practices, and reduce dependence on bought-in feed and fertilisers etc.
  • Shed more light on how to build soil health and encourage the practice of holistic grazing.
  • Reduce the carbon footprint of our food, capture carbon, and work towards zero emissions.
  • Reverse the trend of struggling rural communities. To encourage the rebirth of family farms.
  • Give the policymakers the confidence to help Welsh farmers to achieve all of the above.

Jones Bros chairman Huw Jones MBE is thrilled to be backing the event, saying: “Sustainability and protecting the environment is always at the forefront of each and every scheme we undertake.

“With that in mind, Da Byw’s passion and commitment to the topic is clear to see, and it aligns with our work in the renewables sector.

“Farmers need confidence that sustainable methods will work, and this event is the ideal platform to help show the positive impact certain techniques can have.”

Jones Bros has a track record of delivering wind farm projects, including Dogger Bank – the world’s largest offshore wind farm – and 49-turbine North Kyle, whilst it also constructed the substation for tidal energy scheme Morlais.

Organiser of the conference Davina Fetherstonhaugh said: “It is magnificent to receive backing to stage the third in-person Da Byw and continue discussing regenerative farming.

“There is a hugely impressive panel of speakers and an opportunity for farmers to discuss exactly what they need to be sustainable.

“The event, which wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic sponsors, is focused on changing hearts and minds as we look to achieve the Welsh Government’s 2050 net zero goal.”

Jones Bros is giving budding civil engineers of the future a glimpse into the industry with its Build a Bridge Challenge.

Presenting an enlightening and hands-on experience designed to captivate individuals of all ages, the task helps foster an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Participants are given the opportunity to construct a 13-metre cable-stayed suspension bridge, which each member is invited to cross once building has been completed.

Aimed principally at primary and secondary school pupils, the process develops teamwork, creativity, and practical problem-solving skills.

Sponsors Jones Bros provides hard hats, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and goggles for the two groups, which consist of peggers, cleaters, fixers, and transporters that work from either end of the bridge.

Gwynedd-based trio Ysgol O M Edwards (Llanuwchllyn), Ysgol Bro Tryweryn (Frongoch), and Ysgol Ffridd y Llyn (Cefnddwysarn), as well as Denbighshire’s Ysgol Bro Dyfrdwy (Cynwyd) are amongst the schools to have participated in the challenge.

Jones Bros head of business management systems and support Tony Murphy, who helps coordinate the visits, said: “It is a wonderful hour of fun for a class of students, and I know everyone thoroughly enjoys contributing to the challenge.

“It’s brilliant that pupils can learn so many life skills, such as teamwork, confidence, responsibility, and health and safety, whilst learning.

“The task obviously targets STEM subjects, but it also helps with aspects like geography in terms of where to build bridges, language with new words learned, and listening a vital part of the assignment, as well as art when it comes to exploring ideas, shapes, and spaces.

“As a company, we are always keen to help nurture future civil engineers, and this gives us the perfect opportunity to answer questions and garner interest in the industry.”

Ysgol O M Edwards headteacher Sion Tudor Jones, who is also acting head of Ysgol Bro Tryweryn and Ysgol Ffridd y Llyn, said: “One of the topics we were looking at this term was around bridges following the tragic events in Baltimore.

“So, when the opportunity to take part in the Build a Bridge Challenge with Jones Bros came up, it was perfect timing.

“It offered the pupils some important work around STEM, providing great insight into how bridges are constructed and learning the meaning of words such as tension and anchor.”

It’s a case of Go! Go! Go! for Denbigh High School as they gear up for the F1 in Schools World Finals with the help of Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.

Team Epoch will fly the chequered flag for Wales having successfully finished top of the podium at the National Finals in Leeds in 2023.

Participants are tasked with designing, building, and racing miniature F1 cars, with assessment based across a variety of areas, including speed, engineering quality, brand identity, and presentation skills.

Having crossed the winning line in Yorkshire, Epoch will be taking on the best the world has to offer in Saudi Arabia in November, the event coinciding with the Qatar Grand Prix.

Students have been raising funds for the trip alongside their work on the professional class criteria, which offers the highest level of challenge in terms of car design and assessment, with Jones Bros providing some important machinery.

Denbigh High School headteacher Mr Glen Williams said: “It’s fantastic to receive any level of support as this really is a labour of love for the students, who put plenty of time and effort into doing the very best job possible.

“Jones Bros has kindly provided backing to ensure that we can secure some vital equipment, including a belt sander.

“We’ve had incredible success in this competition and that is thanks to the assistance we’ve received as well as the high standards and commitment of the pupils and entire school.”

Epoch was not the only team in the school to take part in the scheme as Team Elan and Team Viperia were crowned North Wales champions in their age groups of professional and development classes respectively.

Interest in the programme has led to Denbigh High School, whose head of design and technology, Mr Gareth Jones, is also an F1 in Schools judge, to introduce an engineering course to its GCSE curriculum.

Mr Williams continued: “We have 18 students both this year and next who have decided to go down that path, and it’s wonderful that there is such an interest in an important industry.”

Epoch team manager Jasmin Jones said: “We’re incredibly excited to represent Wales in the upcoming World Finals.

“F1 in Schools is an innovative educational initiative that fuels our passion for engineering but also provides us with invaluable industry insights and connections, as well as offering a platform to develop crucial skills and ignite career aspirations.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of Jones Bros. The company’s interest in this competition and investment in the engineers of the future is invaluable and epitomises the values of the competition as a whole.”

Tony Murphy, head of business management systems and support at Jones Bros, and Welsh Labour MP for Clwyd North Gill German visited Denbigh High School to hear about its success story.

“They are a great bunch of students, whose passion and dedication are phenomenal,” said Tony. “It’s superb from our point of view as a company that we can help young people succeed in areas they have a desire to achieve in.

“It’s also a key part of learning and developing. This project has plenty of transferrable skills when it comes to the world of civil engineering.

“To see the school also running an engineering course due to the popularity of the industry is hugely encouraging.”

Health and safety is always top of the agenda for Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK – and its support of North Wales Cave Rescue Organisation (NWCRO) reaffirms that.

The civil engineering firm has sponsored the charity which aims to preserve and protect humans and animals injured or stranded.

Needing to raise around £15,000 in the next few years to update and upgrade key equipment, Jones Bros is contributing towards the purchase of a rock exotica vortex tripod set.

It’s a donation that will help NWCRO’s 50-strong team continue to respond to calls, which average around one per month, in the most efficient way possible.

Robin Jones, Jones Bros payroll analyst and member of the cave rescue organisation, said: “We have limited funds and sponsorship like the one provided by Jones Bros goes an awfully long way.

“There is a list of things that we’d like to have, but there are other items that we need to operate, and this money will help us towards acquiring those.

“We constantly replace hundreds of metres of rope, which costs up to £2.70 per metre, and had to recently update two stretchers priced at £2,000 each.

“We simply can’t afford for anything to go wrong when we are deployed, so having equipment that is fit for purpose is non-negotiable.

“The tripod is an important piece of kit as a lot of the open mineshafts we attend are in various states of collapse given they’ve been abandoned for more than 100 years. It will allow us to access these without disturbing the fragile edges.”

The importance of NWCRO was highlighted in early May when three explorers were trapped in the Croesor-Rhosydd mine system between Croesor and Tanygrisiau near Blaenau Ffestiniog.

The through-route from one end to the other is a common one for enthusiasts, but some equipment is old or missing, meaning the course, which involves zip wires, suspension bridges, and inflatable boats, is fraught with danger.

Robin, who started caving 14 years ago, explained: “We were notified of the incident at just after 1am on the Sunday night and managed to get them to the surface at around 6am.

“Our expertise really came to the fore because we’d spent the day training in that exact mine system and recognised one of the specific pieces of machinery mentioned in the call.

“You can spend two-to-three days looking for people underground if you don’t know where they are, so that showcased the importance of our work.”

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is cheering on a North Wales football team to help safeguard women’s sport within the region.

The Ruthin-based firm is the main shirt sponsor of Denbigh Town Ladies FC for the fourth season in a row, providing new home, away, and training kits for the adult squad.

The backing is especially significant to team captain Elen James-Owen, who joined the club as a 14-year-old, and is now a senior quantity surveyor at Jones Bros.

She said: “Having the continued encouragement and financial support from Jones Bros is invaluable to the players and our volunteers.

“I’m grateful to work for a company which is committed to helping increase young girls’ access to sport, particularly as we are the only women’s football team in the heart of the Vale of Clwyd.

“A lot has changed in the game throughout my time at Denbigh Town. When I was younger, the girls’ side folded and there wasn’t a squad I could join until I was 16.

L-R: Ellen Lawson, Elen James-Owen, and Carla Rizzi.

“Nowadays, we have plenty of girls who come along, taking part in our junior girls’ section ran by Carla Rizzi and Ellen Lawson, who also play and manage the ladies side.”

Highlights across the past two years include Denbigh Town hosting a number of international matches at its Central Park home, welcoming teams from Wales, Brazil, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Hungary, amongst others.

In 2023, the prestigious Victory Shield was also played at the venue, and various Welsh women’s youth international matches have been held.

In addition to the playing kits, Jones Bros has contributed towards Denbigh Town’s refurbishment plans for its clubhouse facilities, allowing it to continue hosting international matches.

For example, the 2026 under-19s European Championships are set to be held at Central Park, which will see young talent compete for the international title in North Wales, forming part of the Football Association of Wales’ 150th anniversary.

Denbigh Town chairman Shon Powell said: “Our ladies’ team is a vital community asset and allows women and girls in the area to play the game that we all love.

“For any club to deliver what we see on the pitch, we require the backing of everyone, and Jones Bros has been incredible in their long-term support of our club and we can’t thank them enough once again.

“The new shirts have looked superb this season and seem to have been a lucky charm with the side finishing as runners-up in the league.”

The civil engineering contractor is no stranger to supporting local sport clubs, with the firm announcing sponsorship of junior rugby and football teams in Ruthin, where a handful of its employees have children involved.

Elen added: “Jones Bros is keen to support its staff in and outside of work, and because many of us live locally, we see first-hand how our communities are enriched while projects take place.

“For example, the former North Wales Hospital, which Jones Bros is currently developing, can be seen from the grounds where we train, and acts as a great reminder that it brings benefits to the areas it operates within.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

Jones Bros environment manager Sam Higgitt has enjoyed a long affiliation with the club, joining when he was just five years old, and is now involved coaching his children’s teams at Cae Ddol every Sunday morning.

Sam said: “Providing warm weather clothes for the winter and shorts and t-shirts for the summer months is a huge help in showing just how valued our coaches are, while also bringing them a sense of unity.

Ruthin Rugby Club is a major community asset and many families of Jones Bros employees are involved, so it’s fantastic for the company to back the great work that’s being done.”

In addition, the civil engineering firm has extended its long-standing relationship with Ruthin Town FC by sponsoring the under-10s and 12s match day kits for two seasons.

Jones Bros contracts director Eryl Roberts, whose children play for both the rugby and football teams, added: “It’s brilliant to live in a place where local organisations are keen to get behind community groups and initiatives.

“This sponsorship will be a significant help as it gives them one less thing to worry about. It’s a meaningful gesture and a thanks for all the work the volunteers do.

A North Wales-based civil engineering firm is showcasing the core values it has upheld for more than 50 years in its inaugural environmental, social, and governance (ESG) report.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is not affected by the climate-related financial disclosure mandate but recognises that stakeholders are turning to impact over profit and now is the time to get ahead of the curve.

The report outlines its key achievements, including the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank, which directly helped the company invest in 40 apprentices, who will be able to apply their skills to future work in renewables.

Jones Bros also built the £135m Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass, placing travel and sustainability high on the agenda, with local measures for habitat protection, as well as new crossings and enhanced signs to promote safe walking.

The scheme received The George Gibby trophy from the Institution of Civil Engineers Wales, given to the best example of outstanding design and construction.

The Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation also commended the bypass works with its Environment/Sustainability Project of the Year honour, acknowledging the initiatives carried out that align with the United Nation’s development goals.

John Dielhof, managing director at Jones Bros, said: “For the last 50 years, we’ve continuously shown our commitment to ESG activities. This report has given us a platform to break down each moving part that makes the company a success.

“We will continue to pride ourselves in setting the industry standard and hope that it encourages other like-minded businesses to communicate their efforts, as it would certainly be positive for the sector.”

Jones Bros, which has plans to reach net zero by 2050, has saved more than 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions through the introduction of solar power and hybrid generators, cutting fuel usage by 1,500 litres with an electrical pool car fleet.

The firm champions its gold award status for 15 years in a row with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, as well as its sponsorship of Mates in Mind, a sector-specific mental health charity which helps companies to support their workforce.

John continued: “Our employees are just as important to acknowledge in our ESG efforts, as they represent the company and help us evolve in an ever-changing business landscape.

“I’m thrilled with what we’ve accomplished and I’m keen to see how we will continue to develop, invest in our people, and support the communities where we work.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has supported one of Wales’ toughest sporting competitions, responsible for raising tens of thousands for local charities.

The Ruthin-headquartered firm sponsored the Marathon Eryri by providing funding to supply high-visibility jackets for volunteers to assist runners on the day.

The civil engineering contractor’s involvement comes as part of its work to demolish the Llanberis-based Electric Mountain Visitor Centre, which will be removed and re-instated as grassland earmarked for community activities.

Located a short distance from the site, the race dates back to 1982 and has been voted twice as the best British marathon, with almost 2,300 runners taking part in the 26.2 mile route this year.

The not-for-profit challenge, which encircles Yr Wyddfa, aims to help local community projects in the surrounding area through donating money made from ticket sales.

This year’s annual autumn event saw £33,000 raised for charity partner Tenovus Cancer Care, enough to keep its mobile treatment unit running for seven weeks.

Jones Bros public liaison officer Beatrice Harkin said: “It was fantastic to be involved with such a valued sporting challenge which allows participants to enjoy the exceptional Eryri (Snowdonia) scenery.

“With our work in Llanberis, we are really pleased to have supported the occasion, especially as the money raised will be donated to local causes.”

The event was taken over by organisation Marathon Eryri Cyf from the National Trust in 2007 and was rebranded in 2023 without mention of Snowdonia to fall in line with the National Park Authority’s decision to name the tourist site by its Welsh title.

Race coordinator Jayne Lloyd added: “It meant a great deal for Jones Bros to get involved through helping fund resources for our volunteers on the day.

“We’re immensely thankful as it helps us ensure the occasion can continue to take place, and in turn the benefits provided to groups and charities in the region will be felt long into the future.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has found the target by sponsoring Penrhyn Bay under-8s football team.

As part of its work on the region’s multi-million-pound coastal defence scheme, the Ruthin-based firm has partnered with the town’s youth, helping to provide playing kits and training equipment for two seasons.

Jones Bros is on schedule to deliver £7.5m work of shoreside improvements as part of the marine project, which includes new surfacing, seating, handrails, and parking, as well as a cycle path, by the end of 2023.

Built on a promise to boost the local economy and engage with the community, the company’s public liaison officer for the scheme, Beatrice Harkin, said: “It is another fantastic opportunity to give something back to an area in which we are working.

“Heading into any development, we are always eager to play a positive role, and by helping a group of young athletes we are following through with that commitment.

“We hope the new kits can inspire the team to some impressive results, but to simply see children playing football with friends is motivation enough to provide our support.”

Arwel Baker, coach of Penrhyn Bay under-8s, said: “Almost all the team live within a few minutes of the sea defence work, and I know a few of them have been down to have a look.

“We’re all really grateful for the support Jones Bros has shown in funding our side’s strips and training equipment for the next couple of years.”

Jones Bros project manager Sam Roberts added: “I am immensely pleased with the scheme and how inviting and understanding the local community has been.

“To be able to sponsor organisations and help young people is an added bonus.”

Other community initiatives in the region have included a visit from pupils of Ysgol Glanwydden, which is located just a stone’s throw away from the development.

Fifty-five youngsters enjoyed two three-hour sessions in the information cabin, which included identifying true or false statements about the scheme, while there was a trip to the seafront to see the Jones Bros team in action.

Children were also tasked with creating an informative poster explaining the coastal defence project.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.
