Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has boosted the ecological security of a landfill quarry in Durham as part of key site improvements.

The Joint Stocks waste management project has seen the Ruthin-headquartered company carry out 70,000m² of earthworks and undertake 50,000m² of permanent capping.

Located between Coxhoe and Quarrington Hill, the six-month restoration project for Durham County Council saw the containment cell sealed with 1mm polyethylene membrane and a geosynthetic drainage layer to ensure it is impermeable.

In addition, 30 new gas wells were constructed to safely extract landfill gasses such as methane, a by-product of burying waste, to be used to generate electricity for the national grid.

Jones Bros project manager Lee Daly said: “We have fully sealed and stabilised Joint Stocks, as well as drastically improved the appearance of the former quarry.

“The capping will ensure the environmental security of the site, and through our gas management practices, capturing and converting methane will allow a clean source of energy to be generated.

“The team holds decades of experience in landfill projects, which has been reflected by no accidents or incidents during the duration of the scheme.”

Jones Bros has also used its expertise to install a central surface system and construct an attenuation lagoon, where clean, uncontaminated water is stored during periods of heavy rainfall before being discharged into river courses.

The 4,500m² basin is fully lined with 2mm of high-density polyethylene membrane and geotextile to ensure no water seeps into the soil, with the team additionally installing fencing and gates to prevent unauthorised access.

In addition to its completion of works at Joint Stocks, the firm has retained its place as the sole contractor on a multi-million-pound framework for FCC Environment, one of the UK’s largest waste management companies, for another two years.

Lee added: “Our team’s legacy and expertise across all aspects of remediation schemes means we are in a strong position to continue to carry out these critical projects whilst actively protecting the natural surroundings.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has completed the realignment of the A40 near Sennybridge in Powys that was initially limited to single lane traffic following a landslip.

The Ruthin-headquartered firm was appointed by the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA) to work on the multi-million-pound project, which has included building a soil nailed retaining structure with a hard facing alongside the site of the earthfall, a contingent factor in aiding the flow of vehicles in both directions.

Jones Bros carried out a vital ground stabilisation technique on the carriageway, with the installation of more than 500 soil nails to reinforce the embankment.

Championing driver safety, 300 metres of the A40 was realigned to rectify a severe bend causing poor visibility issues, with upgrades also made to the crash barrier systems.

The civil engineering contractor consulted with Natural Resources Wales to ensure there was minimal impact on an ancient woodland and the River Usk, which is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and a special area of conservation (SAC).

Flowing beneath the trunk road, the river encompasses an important wildlife corridor for breeding birds, otter, and Atlantic stream crayfish.

Honouring its efforts to use a local supply chain on the project, Jones Bros partnered with a Brecon-based soil disposal and earthworks firm to support with the removal of 4,000 tonnes of material from the site.

Jones Bros project manager Gareth Jones said: “This is a major development in Mid Wales, and we’re thrilled to have played a key part in ensuring road standards are updated and in turn, vehicle users are more protected.

“Working on a long, narrow site has had its challenges and constraints but we maintained single lane traffic throughout. The sequence of our activity was key to minimising the extent of potential disruption.

“As with all our schemes we have done our utmost to make sure that the effect on the environment and wildlife is minimal, thanks to our collaboration with Natural Resources Wales.”

The A40 team started work in January 2023, comprising of 15 staff members, including a trainee plant operative, and an apprentice engineer.

NMWTRA said: “We’re pleased that Jones Bros has successfully enabled the reopening of both lanes on the A40. This has been achieved with minimal disruption to the traveling public.

“Work was carried out in a safe and sustainable manner, despite the challenging site conditions squeezed between the hillside and the river.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

A leading civil engineering firm has started work on a crucial multi-million-pound coastal defence scheme.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, appointed by Conwy Borough Council, is utilising its expertise to deliver £7.5m worth of shoreside improvements as part of the Penrhyn Bay development.

The Ruthin-based company will procure and import 70,000 tonnes of rock armour, sourced from North Wales quarries, which will be built in a T-shape rock groyne to reduce beach erosion and minimise the impact of stormy weather and associated coastal flooding.

Jones Bros will also import large quantities of shingle to replenish the beach in order to protect the existing stepped defences, the promenade, and the infrastructure behind it.

The seafront is to benefit from improvements, with the area opposite The Beach Café Bar set to have new surfacing, seating, and handrailing fitted.

Current parking areas are to be relocated closer to the entrance of Rhos Golf Club, whilst a new pedestrian and cyclist crossing point will be instated between Maes Gwyn Road and Pendorlan Road, with a disabled beach access ramp also installed.

The public space improvements, including the promenade and cycle path, are expected to be finished by early summer.

The onshore coastal defence aspects of the project are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023, with Jones Bros set to have up to 30 staff, including apprentices and trainees, across the entire scheme.

Residents will be kept up to date with a project information cabin located onsite.

Jones Bros senior contracts manager, Dafydd Elis, said: “As a local company, it’s wonderful to be awarded the scheme, which we know will be of great benefit to the community.

“We have vast experience in coastal and marine projects, having worked on schemes across North Wales and the UK, including Rhyl, Tywyn, Old Colwyn, Clacton-on-Sea, and the Isle of Wight.

“As with every project we do, we have looked at sourcing material from the region and it’s fantastic that we can use North Wales quarries and help the local economy.”

Cllr Goronwy Edwards, cabinet member for environment, roads, and facilities – infrastructure, added: “Coastal defences are important to protect our communities from the increased threat of climate change, sea level rises and storms. This work is an integral part of the council’s strategy and will benefit the residents of Penrhyn Bay for a long time to come.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass has been completed ahead of time and will open to traffic tomorrow (Saturday, 19 February).

Construction of the £139m scheme, delivered by the Balfour Beatty Jones Bros Joint Venture, began in 2019 with work continuing throughout the Covid-19 pandemic with safeguards in place to protect the workforce.

One of the largest recent infrastructure projects in North Wales, the 9.7km bypass runs from the Goat Roundabout on the A499/A487 to the Plas Menai roundabout. 17 major structures were built as part of the scheme and 99 per cent of the excavated materials were recycled and reused on the bypass. The project also includes improved active travel routes for walking and cycling in the area.

The scheme has provided a boost for the local economy with close to £70m spent with Welsh businesses of which £12m was spent on small to medium enterprises. £2m was also spent by the construction workforce in local shops, businesses and services during the construction period.

During the construction stage 93 per cent of the workforce came from the North Wales area, with 31 per cent living within a 10-mile radius. 36 graduates and apprentices were employed and trained while 15 people received work experience. An average of 160 people worked on the scheme at any one time during construction.

Measures have been put in place to minimise the environmental impact of the scheme to improve and enhance biodiversity in the area, including safe passages for wildlife. 170,000 plants, providing around 14 hectares of new native species, woodlands, and scrub, as well as over 20 kilometres of new hedgerows were also planted.

Huw Jones, chairman of Jones Bros, said: “Being a North Wales firm, we are proud to have been involved in delivering the scheme, and it gives us great satisfaction to be able to give employment opportunities to local people and help them in the next stages of their careers.

“That is showcased by the fact that 93 per cent of the workforce on the bypass came from the North Wales area, with 36 graduates and apprentices on the scheme in addition to 15 people receiving work experience.

“Jones Bros was able to play a key part in one of the largest recent infrastructure projects in North Wales as well as leave a legacy in the region.

“The quality of the work is testament to the skilled workers, both within the Balfour Beatty Jones Bros joint venture and also the supply chain, and their dedication to the scheme.”

Deputy Minister for Climate Change with a responsibility for Transport Lee Waters said: “This project represents a significant investment in the area by the Welsh Government and it is testimony to the local workforce that it has been completed ahead of time. As well as the road the project has created new links for walking and cycling which will improve the health and the environment of local communities.”

Minister for North Wales Lesley Griffiths said: “This scheme is one of the largest recent infrastructure programmes in North Wales. It has been delivered ahead of time during an extremely challenging period. I congratulate all those involved for delivering this scheme during the pandemic, while keeping their workforce safe. It is a testament to the skills and commitment we have here in North Wales.”

Minister for Economy Vaughan Gething said: “The Caernarfon and Bontnewydd bypass has been a boost for the local economy during construction, providing opportunities for apprentices and graduates, while businesses and suppliers also benefited. In the long term the improved connectivity to Cibyn Industrial Estate, and wider afield, will be good for region’s economic growth.”

Jon Muff, Project Lead at Balfour Beatty Jones Bros said: “We are very grateful to the team for their hard work and dedication throughout the project, bringing together the skills and expertise across our joint venture to connect communities in Caernarfon and Bontnewydd whilst significantly reducing traffic congestion and improving journey times.

“We are proud of the legacy we are leaving behind, which includes considerable spend in the local area as well as training and upskilling dozens of people, including graduates and apprentices.”

Gwion Lloyd, a 22-year-old engineering apprentice from Harlech who has been on site since he started in 2019, said: “It has been excellent to learn so much on such a major project for the region, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my civil engineering career. It gives me great pride to know that the community, including family and friends, will be able to benefit from the bypass on a regular basis.”

Another key milestone has been reached as a major Wigan highways project continues to progress on schedule.

Seven beams were lifted into place between Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 May, which will allow the A49 link road to cross above Poolstock Lane.

It’s one of three new bridges being installed along the route by contractor Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, which was appointed by Wigan Council to deliver the high-priority scheme.

Diversions were in place as the 71-tonne beams, each 32 metres long, were laid and the civil engineering firm praised commuters for their understanding.

Eryl Evans, contracts manager at Jones Bros, said: “We worked hard in partnership with Wigan Council to advise of road closures in advance to help avoid as much disruption as possible, and we would like to thank road users and pedestrians for their patience throughout the weekend.

“We have now laid the beams to the three new bridges and the final installation will take place later in the year for the widening of New Lion Bridge.”

Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “It’s great that we have reached a number of key milestones for this project over the last couple of months, leading us closer to the completion of the project, which we anticipate will be next year.

“Once complete, the link road will provide many benefits for businesses and residents with better east-west connectivity, improved air quality and less congestion. These are key priorities for the council and support our economic growth strategy.

“We would like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their cooperation throughout the weekend closure and we will be sure to keep the public informed as the works progress.”

The A49 link road will connect Warrington Road and Goose Green to Westwood Park and the town centre at the Poolstock and Chapel Lane junction.

The new road is part of a wider plan for investment in the borough’s road network and is in line with the council’s commitment to generating economic growth and improving infrastructure.

Following works beginning on site in September 2018, it is anticipated that the scheme will be complete in Spring 2020.

The A49 scheme has been made possible through funding support from the Greater Manchester Combines Authority’s Growth Deal pot, which is managed by Transport for Greater Manchester.

The health, safety and environment manager who introduced stricter standards required by major corporate operators in civil engineering as Jones Bros sought to take on bigger contracts, has retired.

And Dave Gibson has praised Jones Bros operatives and other site staff in particular, for “upping their game” during the last nine years, enabling accreditation to higher, national standards, which has also led to multiple health, safety, environment, and training awards for the company.

Dave joined the family firm in 2010 from Carillion. An environmentalist by profession, with a degree in zoology, he spent his earlier career working for North West Water, the National Rivers’ Authority and Environment Agency, before joining Alfred McAlpine, which went on to be bought by Carillion.

He said: “During my time at Jones Bros, the company has grown from a medium to a large company, with more than 350 employees on the books.

“It aspired to work with prestigious clients who all operate to much higher standards than the legal minimum, so Jones Bros had to mature as a company in health, safety, and environmental matters.”

Originally also with responsibility for training, Dave developed his remit until training needs grew to the extent that it was hived off into a separate department in 2015.

A Yorkshireman who married a Lancashire lass and whose family home remains in the Ribble Valley, Dave quickly took to Ruthin, where he bought and refurbished a property to live in during the week.

He added: “Ruthin is a lovely market town.  I have been able to walk or cycle to work and the quality of life working here has been really good.”

Highlights that employees have helped enable Jones Bros to achieve during Dave’s tenure include:

  • Year-on-year RoSPA Gold Awards for Health & Safety leading to the RoSPA’s President’s Award for the last two years
  • Consistent reduction in serious accidents over nine years
  • Maintaining the international ISO 9001 (Quality), 14001 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Health & Safety) and achieving ISO 50001 (Energy) standards
  • Winner of the 2014 Outstanding Training Partner at the CITB ‘Pride of Construction’ Awards
  • CEEQUAL Excellent Award for the Porthmadog bypass contract
  • Various Considerate Constructors Scheme National Awards
  • Achilles UVDB Verify
  • ConstructionLine Gold
  • Safe Contractor
  • Safety Management Advisory Services certification
  • RISQS standard for the railway network

Dave added: “Coming to a family firm after big organisations was a bit scary.  I had come from a company that was centralised where you did not feel that anything you did had any impact, and you were told what to do.

“At Jones Bros, whatever you did was obvious, and being a family company, most people knew everyone else. It was quite a change, but I took to it and I’ve enjoyed my time here.

“However, it’s all very well listing accreditations, but at the end of the day it’s the guys on the ground who do most of the work. I introduced and drove them, but they achieved them.”

Dave is staying for a few months as a part-time consultant, to help the company achieve the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme and Construction Logistics and Community Safety standards, which concerns safety for vulnerable road users such as cyclists.

Looking ahead, he is planning to spend more time with his wife, Judith, adult son and daughter, and grandchildren, plus their 14-year-old foster son.

Dave explained: “We started fostering four years ago. Steven is our second foster child, who has been with us for three years.”

Dave is also going to grow the number of bee hives he keeps, a hobby he started whilst living in Ruthin, and help out more at his local cricket club, of which he is a former chairman.

A leading civil engineering contractor has started work on the next phase of a 150-acre business park in Cheshire.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been appointed by the developers of the Cheshire Green Industrial Park (Cheshire Green) to design and construct a 1km spine road through the development, as well as the junction to each of the 10 units.

As part of the highways project, the family-run company will install a drainage system and carry out kerbing, surfacing, and landscaping.

The contract win continues Jones Bros’ working relationship with Cheshire Green following its construction of a roundabout in 2018, which provides access to the £100m industrial park from the A51.

Gareth Jones, project manager, said: “It’s exciting to carry on playing a role in the construction of Cheshire Green, and we’re looking forward to seeing it develop in the coming weeks and months.

“We have a team of 20 on site including general construction operatives, plant operatives, engineers, and trainees, with the project set to finish in early 2020.

“It’s providing our workforce with a slightly different viewpoint of a highways project because we’re working on a disused airfield. The site is flat to ensure safe take-offs and landings for aircraft, which presented a challenge to design a drainage system that allowed for surface water to drain away correctly and effectively.

“To overcome this, we are installing deeper drainage, up to seven metres deep in some sections, compared to typical projects which are between one and two metres deep.

“In addition, we are working in close proximity to a canal, so we are taking extra precautions to avoid contamination.”

Cheshire Green is on the A51 between Calveley and Barbridge, and next to Boughey Distribution. The location benefits from its easy connections with key motorways including the M6 and M56 as well as the A55 in North Wales.

The units, which are ideal for industrial, warehouse, distribution and storage use, will have access to superfast fibre broadband as well as ample parking and a frequent bus service. Legat Owen and Fisher German are marketing the units.

Phillip Posnett, director of the developer, said: “We are committed to creating a major employment destination here at Cheshire Green. Having been granted consent, we will waste no time in delivering this access which will completely open up the site.

“Jones Bros was fantastic to deal with for the roundabout, and I’m confident their quality of work will come to the fore once more with the construction of the spine road.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros has a wealth of experience in highway schemes.

The company is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family and employs more than 350 people.

In addition to highways, it is currently working on contracts in various sectors including the construction of waste management facilitiesrenewable energy, and flood and marine defence projects across the UK.

A leading civil engineering firm’s innovative use of concrete to minimise waste has been recognised at a major construction industry awards.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK scooped bronze at the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s (CCS) National Site Awards for its work at the Clocaenog Forest Wind Farm, where it is principal contractor for developer innogy Renewables UK.

And its concrete waste reduction method on the site is now being used as an example of best practice in the industry after judges said they’d never seen such a technique before.

With the Denbighshire-based project requiring a total of 17,000 m3 of concrete, surplus material was poured into cube moulds to create building blocks.

The multi-purpose items, which are currently being used as edge protection and walls for aggregate stock bays, helped save 90m3 of concrete from going to waste.

Jones Bros site agent Rhys Roberts said: “We’re proud to have led the way in developing this method, which is now available on the CCS’ best practice hub as an example for others to follow.

“Through using the leftover material, we reduced our carbon footprint by avoiding haulage vehicle journeys to and from a landfill. In addition, it benefits an upcoming project as we intend to use the blocks in some of the concrete structures on that site.

“Our health and safety standards on site were also praised, as was our community engagement, which includes welcoming pupils from local primary schools and a tour for the Denbigh Rotary Club.

“Winning bronze at the annual CCS National Site Awards is a brilliant vote of confidence for the team involved in this project.”

The 27-turbine site will have the capacity to generate enough electricity to meet the needs of up to 63,800 average UK homes per year.

The local community will receive an investment fund from innogy worth up to £768,000 per annum, throughout the lifetime of the project, once the wind farm is operational.

Founded in the 1950s, Jones Bros is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family and employs more than 350 people.

In addition to renewable energy, it works on projects including the construction of waste management facilities, highways, and flood and marine defence projects around the UK.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme, established in 1998, recognises construction sites with high standards in aspects including respecting the community, protecting the environment, and securing workers’ safety.

A leading civil engineering firm is celebrating after being shortlisted for three prestigious industry awards.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is up for the trio of accolades at the Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) Awards, which celebrates the best of the Welsh construction sector.

The Ruthin-based firm’s work on career progression is up for a people development award, and its construction of the final phase of the Llangefni Link Road is shortlisted in the civils project of the year and sustainability categories.

And as part of the judging process, Jones Bros’ training and workforce manager Richard Owen and contracts director Hefin Lloyd Davies will travel to Cardiff to present about the award submissions.

Richard said: “The construction and engineering industry is a demanding and difficult environment affected by many influences including economic, political, cultural, and technological advancements.

“Jones Bros continues to succeed and thrive in this industry by remaining personable and flexible as well as continually investing in and developing a professional, well-trained, dedicated, and highly motivated workforce.

“We actively promote training opportunities and continued development in all areas of the business. We are very proud of our commitment to our people, and this award recognition is a fantastic reminder of that to everyone at Jones Bros.”

Hefin said: “For the team to see a project they worked on get shortlisted in two categories is a huge morale boost, and no less than they deserve.

“The construction of the final phase of the Llangefni Link Road involved an innovative technique to soil stabilise 7,000m3 of surplus unsuitable soils on site during the project.

“This saved more than 3,000 traffic movements to and from site, ultimately reducing the carbon footprint, quarrying operations as well as reducing any waste sent to local landfills.

“In addition, 90 per cent of Jones Bros’ workforce on the scheme live in the local area. Also, our commitment to strengthening the local economy prevails as several of our materials including stone, concrete, and tarmac, were sourced from local suppliers, all of which amounted to more than 40 per cent of the project cost spent directly on the Isle of Anglesey.

“We feel that we have brought an innovative construction method to the attention of the client and with working closely with Isle of Anglesey Council we have built confidence in this construction method for future similar projects to adopt a similar approach.”

Jones Bros find out if they have been successful at the CEW Awards on Friday 7 June at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

At the 2018 awards, the Jones Bros Balfour Beatty joint venture Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm Energy Project was named civil engineering project of the year. The scheme was then awarded the top prize in the same category at the CE national awards later in the year.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family and employs more than 350 people.

The family-owned firm has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years, with many of its senior management having started out in apprenticeship and trainee roles.

In addition to highways, it works on the construction of waste management facilities, renewable energy, and flood and marine defence projects around the UK.

The contract comes after the award-winning company held a ‘Meet The Buyer’ event, in partnership with Wigan Council, as part of its commitment to employing and engaging local businesses during the scheme.

Jones Bros has also appointed other Wigan-based suppliers including workspace provider Office Bay, contractor Paul Blackledge Drilling, and security and cleaning service Radius.

And working with the family firm has led to the opportunity to tender for more contracts, says former building surveyor turned photographer Mike.

He said: “I only photograph construction, architecture, and interior spaces as that is my background, but it was great to get a job in Wigan.

“Working with Jones Bros has allowed me to look at new technologies, such as digital photogrammetry, which is where the drone takes hundreds of high-resolution photographs to create a digital map of the site.

“Thanks to this opportunity, I’ve been asked to tender for further work in Wales, which is absolutely fantastic. I think it’s great to involve local people and companies as it instils a sense of pride.”

Eryl Evans, project manager at Jones Bros added: “We share Wigan Council’s vision around supporting communities and it’s really important to us to work with local people. There’s a fantastic skillset in Wigan and it’s only right we utilise this expertise for this scheme.

“We have made some great contacts while here and the companies we are involved with are providing vital services that are enabling us to deliver this project safely and efficiently.

“We look forward to the next stage of the development and hope to welcome some apprentices on site.”

Leader of the council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “Jones Bros have a wealth of experience in the field and they share our social values, so they were the perfect fit for this project.

“They are making significant progress and it is great to see this new road now taking shape.

“There are many benefits to the link road, such as providing businesses and residents with better east-west connectivity, which is a vital part of the borough’s economic growth strategy.

“Improving connectivity in this way gives people better access to jobs and can encourage businesses to invest in the borough, which is another key priority for us.”

The link road is part of a wider plan for investment in the borough’s road network and is in line with the council’s commitment to generating economic growth and improving infrastructure.

In addition to relieving congestion and improving air quality in the area, the link road will connect Warrington Road and Goose Green to Westwood Park and the town centre at the Poolstock and Chapel Lane junction.

Jones Bros has also held apprenticeship recruitment events at Wigan and Leigh College, giving local young people the chance to learn about job opportunities on the site.

Established in the 1950s, the company is now being run by the second and third generations of the founding family and employs more than 350 people.

The family-owned firm has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years, with many of its senior management having started out in apprenticeship and trainee roles.

As well as highways, it works on projects including the construction of waste management facilities, renewable energy, and flood and marine defence projects around the UK.
