From officed-based roles to on-site activity, Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is shining a spotlight on the key work carried out by female team members this International Women’s Day.

With the annual celebrations following on from Women in Construction Week, this year’s theme of ‘give to gain’ focuses on the importance of reciprocity and support in helping women in the sector thrive.

With this topic in mind, we spoke to several female employees across different departments to understand more about their career journeys with Jones Bros.

Holly Higgins

Having joined the Ruthin-based firm as a HSE Administrator in 2019, Holly has since expanded her skillset and now operates as a Workforce Coordinator, recruiting weekly paid plant operatives across projects throughout the UK.

During peak season, the business will employ around 500 operatives. Her position is vital to ensuring the business continues to run smoothly.

She said: “I had never worked in recruitment before, but I learnt day by day and the site experience my colleagues brought really helped me grow my understanding of the construction and plant industry, so I’m thankful for the support

“Although we still don’t see many women applying for plant operative roles, there have been several female applicants who have secured jobs with us and gone on to achieve great things at major projects such as the Havant Thicket reservoir.

“To women considering a career in construction, I’d say be bold and go for it. There are lots of roles to choose from and it can be a very rewarding career path.

Hayley Drane

Hayley Drane is an inspiring new talent at Havant Thicket Reservoir as an Environment Advisor for Future Water MJJV Ltd – a joint venture between Jones Bros and Mackley.

The Portsmouth University graduate, who is enjoying her time on the first large-scale new water storage reservoir in the UK since the 1980s, said: “I’ve been in my role for a year and a half now and have felt supported by my line manager, the teams on site, and all the environment advisors.

“From day one everyone has been helpful, welcoming, and have all assisted in helping to grow my knowledge in environmental aspects within a large construction project.

“This was my first position after finishing my environmental science degree, and since joining the scheme, another female member of staff has been recruited to the environment team, so it’s great to see more women enter the construction industry.

“My job is varied and rewarding. It includes a mixture of daily on-site activities and office work to help ensure the project is compliant with our environment management plans throughout the year.

“I would highly recommend looking at environmental roles to those interested in entering the sector.”

Gemma Roebuck

With nearly a decade of experience at Jones Bros under her belt, Gemma Roebuck’s career has skyrocketed.

From Site Agent and managing projects in the tendering department to being promoted to Senior Bid Manager, Gemma has taken on every opportunity to expand her skillset.

She said: “I began working in civil engineering at the age of 17 following my career advisor’s suggestion. It’s something I’m very thankful for and also something that I believe showcases the impact that promoting the sector to young women at an early stage can have.

“As a parent, the flexibility and work-life balance Jones Bros has provided has also been brilliant, as I’ve been offered various roles in the business that have accommodated both my personal and professional needs.”

Gemma is now enjoying sharing her knowledge with others, adding: “Alongside overseeing all the technical managers, I’m currently mentoring a female colleague, Erin Baxter, who is undertaking her degree apprenticeship with us.

“It’s great to pass on my knowledge to the next generation and see Erin’s confidence grow as she gains experience working on a variety of tenders and live projects.”

Jane Griffiths

Jones Bros Group Finance Director and Future Water MJJV Ltd Board Member Jane Griffiths is praising the family-owned firm for its strong support and mentorship.

Jane brings a wealth of experience as a former UK Finance Director for a global firm, and is currently responsible for overseeing the business’s financial operations, providing the financial oversight to support growth, managing finance and payroll teams as well as group projects.

Celebrating four years at the company this March, Jane said: “All the staff at Jones Bros, from the top down, have offered me excellent support by not only sharing their knowledge, but challenging me professionally. This has undoubtedly contributed to my growth and knowledge within the construction industry.

“I try to mirror the help I’ve received through my own open-door collaborative approach, encouraging colleagues to come to me for a conversation or advice whenever they need it, and it’s especially pleasing to extend mentorship and guidance to other driven individuals.

“Holding the lead finance role for a company that delivers such large and complex schemes is hugely rewarding, and I’d encourage women exploring their options to trust themselves and their own abilities and not be afraid to apply for roles in civil engineering.”

Michaela Baldock

Working her way up the ranks, Jones Bros Site Agent Michaela Baldock believes choosing a career in Civil Engineering is “one of the best things” she’s ever done.

Since joining the team at Sandy Knowe Wind Farm in Scotland as an Engineer in 2022, Michaela’s climb up the ladder means she is currently managing approximately 250 personnel on site, including groundworkers, foremen, and engineers at Sanquhar II Wind Farm.

She said: “There is lots of variety in my work and every day is different, so you’re continuously learning and overcoming new challenges, which I really enjoy.

“I also love the responsibility of leading my own team. Crucially, my colleagues, particularly my direct manager David Nicolson, are open and approachable so I know I have people I can turn to for help.”

A “major technical milestone” has been hit at Portsmouth Water’s multi-million-pound Havant Thicket Reservoir scheme courtesy of the installation of a 20-tonne steel wall.

The innovative barrier was constructed by Future Water MJJV Ltd, a joint venture between Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK and Mackley, with key contributions from Coffey Geotechnics Ltd, Keller UK, and GHD UK.

The culvert cut-off wall, which measures 13 metres wide and nine metres high and took 72 hours to install, will sit beneath the main reservoir embankment.

Constructed on site and lifted into position in a single piece using a 100-tonne crane, it is designed to seal the connection between the embankment and the culvert that holds the pipeline which will take water from the reservoir.

Requiring precision to within just 25 millimetres, the wall was lowered carefully into an eight-metre-deep trench filled with bentonite slurry mix, with the on-site team working around the clock in rotating shifts to combat the hardening of the special watertight mixture.

Deputy project director for Future Water and earthworks construction director Geraint Lloyd said: “It’s a major milestone for the team here at Havant, and one everyone is rightly proud of.

“To achieve the level of accuracy needed with a structure of that size and weight is a huge achievement, and that’s before considering the time constraints.

“It was a wonderful effort which required planning, teamwork, and exceptional focus throughout the 72 hours.”

Led by Portsmouth Water, the project is the UK’s first major water-storage reservoir since the 1980s.

Bob Taylor, chief executive officer of Portsmouth Water, said: “This is a major technical milestone for the Havant Thicket Reservoir project and an incredibly proud moment for everyone involved.

“Working continuously for 72 hours presented challenges and we were acutely aware of the need to keep disruption to a minimum for local residents. We made sure noise and lighting were reduced as far as possible and installed an acoustic barrier, to ensure as little noise as possible travelled from site. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while this key piece of work took place.

“This milestone marks significant progress for the Havant Thicket Reservoir project, which will play a vital role in protecting two globally rare chalk streams in Hampshire, by providing a new, sustainable source of water. Last year saw excellent progress on site, and we look forward to our main earthworks season starting in spring this year.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 550 people.

A leading civil engineering firm is advancing a major active travel route across southern Anglesey in a bid to create a healthier Wales.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is delivering a 1.25km shared pedestrian and cycle path from Pen Cob car park to Newborough after being appointed by Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn – the Isle of Anglesey County Council.

The scheme will separate users from vehicles on the A4080 for safety purposes, whilst bird watching areas, benches, and cycle stands are being installed in various areas, including the Malltraeth Cob – the local name for the one-mile-long embankment and bridge that crosses the River Cefni.

As principal contractor, the Ruthin-based firm’s 15-strong team, which includes a trainee engineer and a trainee quantity surveyor, is also carrying out minor works to the cob to create the build-outs, designed to enhance viewing safety by preventing collisions between oncoming traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Further measures to enhance accessibility and safety include resurfacing existing footways throughout Newborough village, together with the installation of 28 speed cushions and a raised table junction

Managed by Transport for Wales and funded by the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund, the new route forms part of the Glasffordd Môn Steering Group’s vision of a green corridor across Anglesey that benefits local communities, landscapes, and ecosystems.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK contracts manager Emlyn Roberts said: “It’s fantastic to see how well the scheme is progressing, and we’ve already had lots to positive and encouraging feedback from residents.

“From a personal perspective, welcoming a trainee engineer and trainee quantity surveyor on site has also been great, as they’ve gained hands-on, practical experience as part of our skilled team.

“With our expertise in delivering active travel routes, such as the Llechwedd Quarry to Blaenau Ffestiniog along the A470, we know how much of an impact they can have on the local community.”

Huw Percy, Anglesey’s head of highways, property, and waste services, said: “This project is about addressing the current connection between the communities of Malltraeth and Newborough.

“By creating a dedicated active travel route, we are providing residents with a safe, sustainable and accessible way to walk and cycle between the villages.

“This not only supports everyday journeys, but also strengthens social cohesion and promotes healthier, more sustainable travel choices.”

As part of immersing itself in the local community, Jones Bros has engaged with Ysgol Santes Dwynwen through the Build a Bridge Challenge, which is designed to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning.

The firm supplied hard hats, high-visibility clothing, gloves, and goggles for pupils to work in teams to construct and cross a 13-metre cable-stayed suspension bridge – a task aimed at developing youngsters’ creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s work on Dogger Bank Wind Farm will help boost the country’s economy by an eye-catching £6.1 billion.

The world’s largest offshore wind farm will be capable of generating enough power for around six million UK homes each year once fully operational.

As a tier one contractor, Jones Bros was responsible for the installation of onshore cable infrastructure for the Creyke Beck grid connections in East Riding of Yorkshire.

The Ruthin-headquartered firm was also appointed to deliver the enabling works package for the onshore converter station platforms for Dogger Bank C in a joint contract with neighbouring Sofia Offshore Wind Farm.

Jones Bros is also responsible for delivering trenching, duct installation, and joint bays for the 2km connection for the third phase of the wind farm, near Redcar, and the National Grid infrastructure at Lackenby on Teesside.

A report written by economic consultants BVG Associates highlighted that the 10-figure sum is driven by significant investment in UK companies, jobs, and skills during the wind farm’s lifecycle.

Jones Bros certainly played its part with:

  • Around 85 per cent of its contract value delivered by itself or UK-based companies, with 55 per cent of subcontracted work awarded to firms in the north east.
  • More than 230 jobs supported, including 115 directly and 116 indirectly through the supply chain.
  • Eight higher apprentices, including one from the north east, working on Dogger Bank as part of the company’s development plan.
  • 46 plant operatives and groundworkers, including 12 local recruits, on site, with around 30 per cent retained upon completion.

Jones Bros senior contracts manager James Lockwood said: “We are always eager to give our apprentices and trainees valuable on-site experience, and as the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank is a hugely significant project to be a part of.

“The numbers speak for themselves, and I know it has always brought everyone from senior managers to trainees and apprentices a great sense of pride to be associated with the scheme.”

The report was commissioned by Dogger Bank’s equity partners SSE, Equinor, and Vårgrønn, who are currently constructing the offshore wind farm in three 1.2GW phases at adjoining sites in the North Sea more than 130km from the Yorkshire coast.

Energy minister Michael Shanks said: “Clean, homegrown power is the right choice for families and industry right across the country. Wind power is cheaper, cleaner, and more secure than new gas – helping us bring down bills for good.

“As shown by this independent report, offshore wind projects such as Dogger Bank will generate billions for the UK, while also delivering thousands of good jobs – showing once again that clean power is the economic opportunity of the 21st century.”

Dogger Bank Wind Farm project director, Olly Cass, said:  “People have always been at the heart of everything we do on Dogger Bank Wind Farm. Even from the early days of planning, there was an inherent drive from everyone involved to see what value we could unlock through this extraordinary engineering masterpiece.

”Offshore wind is a global sector with a global supply chain, but this report proves we have the skills, expertise, and desire in the UK to fuel the energy transition and create economic value that’s far-reaching.

“The ripple effects of our UK spend, generating £6.1 billion for the UK economy, can be felt from the Highlands of Scotland, down to the south coast, and plenty more in between.”

A leading civil engineering firm is advancing its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts through solar-powered generators, fuel-efficient machinery, and on-site health and safety milestones.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s latest ESG report shines the spotlight on several projects, including Penrhyn Bay coastal defence scheme in North Wales, North Kyle Wind Farm in Scotland, and the Vita Nova Centre in Cheshire.

Work on the latter, a 100 per cent carbon neutral operations building in Middlewich, saw fuel consumption cut by more than 50 per cent using solar power generators.

A cement stabilisation design further minimised pollution by eliminating the need for 600 vehicle movements, whilst water usage was reduced by 85 per cent through the installation of a rainwater harvesting system.

Environmental stewardship was further demonstrated by the Ruthin-based firm after it successfully relocated a shore-sized habitat of honeycomb reef worm as part of the £7.5m Penrhyn Bay programme.

The project itself earned a rating of ‘excellent’ for site practices from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), achieving a perfect score in both the ‘respect the community’ and ‘value their workforce’ categories.

In addition, the company has shown strong health and safety credentials after reaching 500,000 hours on-site without a lost time incident on the £300 million North Kyle Wind Farm scheme near Dalmellington, Scotland.

Jones Bros chairman Huw Jones MBE said: “At Jones Bros, responsible business practices are at the heart of everything we do, as shown in our latest ESG report.

“We believe it’s important to set an example of the standard of conduct expected for civil engineering firms across the UK and, as such, we aim to continue delivering high-quality results and communicating our successes to inspire other companies to do the same.”

The Ruthin-headquartered firm also sports a portfolio of clean energy infrastructure projects including the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank, situated off the coast of Yorkshire, which will power six million British homes upon completion.

Other sustainability projects include £24.6 million tidal energy scheme Morlais in Anglesey and the Havant Thicket Reservoir in Hampshire – the first large-scale new water storage reservoir in the UK since the 1980s.

In addition, investing in the future of the industry remains a priority with a new operative training scheme launched to replace the level two apprenticeship removed by the Welsh Government.

Jones Bros has recruited more than 300 apprentices over the past decade.

New plant has also been a focus for the Welsh firm, with its recent purchase of hybrid HB365LC-11s excavators. Each machine saves more than six litres of fuel per hour.

Huw continued: “We wouldn’t be able to achieve such fantastic results without the hard work of all our team, so I’m thankful to everyone for their dedication and the tangible difference it makes to our operations.

“Looking ahead, I’m excited to see how we will continue to benefit the communities we work with, support our staff, and play a key role in delivering major projects across the UK.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

A leading civil engineering firm has helped Windy Standard III Wind Farm reach a significant construction milestone with the first pouring of concrete on turbine foundations.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK is the principal contractor for the multi-million-pound 20-turbine scheme in Dumfries and Galloway, which will have the capacity to power more than 130,000 UK homes annually.

The North Wales-headquartered contractor completed the 400m3 pour in approximately nine hours by utilising its two on-site concrete batching plants, which cuts down vehicle movements both offsite and onsite, and helps streamline programme delivery.

The Fred. Olsen Renewables-led development, first consented in 2021, will be capable of generating 87.6 megawatts of renewable energy.

Elliot Bidmead, project manager for Jones Bros, is excited that the project is on schedule.

He said: “Reaching and completing the first foundation pour is always a significant milestone on our wind farm developments.

“It is the culmination of weeks of tireless work by our highly skilled and well-organised team, which is already focused on making further progress in the forthcoming weeks and months.”

The pouring of concrete for turbine foundations follows the completion of ground investigation, access track construction, and associated crane hardstand construction, to allow for turbine delivery and erection.

The Jones Bros team of 47, including apprentices, is now undertaking remaining foundation construction, construction of the control building, and cabling works, ahead of turbine delivery starting in April 2026.

First power generation from the wind farm in south west Scotland is expected in winter 2026.

Jones Bros contracts director Garod Evans said: “It’s a key landmark in the delivery of what is another sizeable renewable energy scheme in Scotland.

“We have recently reached a similar stage on another wind farm in the country, while we are working on a number of other live projects.

“It’s a portfolio that showcases the talented team we have at our disposal.”

Eirik Brandsdal, project manager at Fred. Olsen Renewables, said: “This is a major milestone for Windy Standard III.

“The Jones Bros team has worked tirelessly and with precision to reach this point, and we’re thrilled with the pace and professionalism they’ve brought to the project.

“Their efficient delivery is helping us stay firmly on track for first power in 2026.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced nearly 40 per cent of its current workforce, with many of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited more than 100 apprentices during the past three years.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK’s Tony Murphy has played a key role in uncovering the employment benefits of onshore wind at RenewableUK Cymru’s Future Energy Wales 2025 conference.

The head of business management support imparted his expertise as part of a Q&A style panel discussion on ‘What do we want? Jobs! When do we want them? Now!’.

Conversations centred on how upscaling onshore wind could help attract greater investment, create and safeguard green jobs, develop local skills, and rejuvenate rural economies within Wales.

Joining Tony in the session were Welsh Government head of net zero and digital skills Andrew Granville, North Wales Regional Skills Partnership regional skills manager Sian Lloyd Roberts, and RenewableUK skills and social value manager James Lord.

Having delivered several wind farms across Wales, including the 76-turbine Pen y Cymoedd, and major projects at Brenig and Clocaenog, Tony believes Jones Bros is well placed to share insights on developing the skills and people needed to support green power.

He said: “The opportunity to speak at such an established event alongside fellow experts was fantastic, and I’m grateful to have taken part.”

“As a Wales-based firm, we are passionate about delivering long-lasting benefits across the nation through renewable energy schemes, so highlighting the positive impact onshore wind farms can have on employment is crucial.

“By ensuring we demystify where to obtain green jobs and what skillsets are required to deliver such projects, we are helping secure a pipeline of talent for the future.”

Held at the International Convention Centre Wales (ICC) in Newport, Jones Bros contracts director Eryl Roberts also attended the two-day event.

The conference offered guests the chance to:

  • Connect with more than 500 businesses within Wales’ renewable energy sector
  • Learn key insights from high-profile speakers including figures from the Welsh and UK Governments
  • Discover how UK-wide policies and targeted sector plans are driving change in Wales’s energy future
  • Understand how Wales can benefit from offshore wind development proposals in the Celtic Sea
  • Explore ways to promote green energy investment in Wales and strengthen the supply chain

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 550 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.

The company runs an award-winning apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large percentage of its current workforce, with several of its senior managers having started out as apprentices or in a trainee role. It has recruited hundreds of apprentices over the years.
